It is commonly mined in Brazil, Netherlands and India, each with its own unique properties. Kyanite has an unusual hardness characteristic; lengthwise across the stone its ranges from 4-5 Mohs but across the blade the hardness increases to 6-7 Mohs making it challenging to cut and polish.
