The exterior of the crystal appears matted due to a thin layer of matrix clinging to the surface while giving off a faint earthy musk. This helps to highlight the beautiful etchings on the surface and especially the base. Smaller companions cling to the surface gaining from the wise energies to this old soul. A few minor bruises are present at its side, but do not diminish the presence and beauty of this soul.

Interesting crystals with deep resonating energy have been emerging recently from Zomba, Malawi. The smoky quartz crystals are no exception. The smoky quartz from this locale is often paired with aegirine, but these crystals are beautiful all on their own. Smoky quartz has a sweetly grounding energy that is just right. It helps to keep you grounded when working with very high vibrational stones. Although very grounding, smoky quartz brings great joy as it surrounds you in a net of security. True morion quartz is rare and frequently black quartz is recreated by irradiating quartz in commercial settings. While similar physical results occur, the crystals have a much different feel. Natural morion quartz retains some translucence when held up to the light, while altered quartz does not. Protect their deep color from sun exposure as they will fade black to gray under prolonged exposure. "Morions" were a type of helmet used around the time of the Conquistadors, which speaks to the stone's protective and shielding qualities.
